Homesick Steven Gerrard and wife Alex ‘desperate’ to return home this summer
The former England ace wants to leave LA Galaxy and come back to the UK
STEVEN Gerrard and his wife Alex are believed to be desperate to leave Los Angeles and return to the UK as soon as possible.
Reports this morning have suggested that the footballer is homesick having tried but failed to settle into Californian life.
A source told the Mirror: “He and Alex took some of their close friends to LA with them but they’re finding it tough.”
Last autumn, Gerrard revealed how much he missed being in the UK and the Premiership.
He said: “I miss everything about it. When I switch on the TV and see the stadiums, the intensity, the tension. I am jealous. I miss the build-up, competing with better players.
“I miss my friends and my family. I miss a bit of cold weather. I miss going to the games.
“Obviously the city’s a fantastic city for myself and my family, the climate, there’s plenty to do. I’m pretty much unnoticed as well, which is a bonus.
“The people across this country are passionate about soccer. Because of the sheer size of this country, there’s going to be no stopping the MLS. It’s going to keep growing rapidly.”
He and his wife Alex, who he married in 2007, have three daughters – Lilly-Ella, 12, Lexie, 10, and Lourdes, four
And Alex spoke about how she said she struggled to get her eldest excited over the move.
She said: “She’s, like ‘oh no, I don’t want to go, I don’t want to leave my friends.”
Today SunSport can reveal that former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wants to bring Gerrard with him to Celtic as player-assistant.
Other reports have suggested he might be returning home to Liverpool having been offered a a coaching role at his former club.
The reports about his move come as it was revealed he is building a mansion in an exclusive area of Merseyside.
He is also reportedly spending £100,000 on an adventure play area for his children including a £10,000 Wendy house with its own private lawn, plus a £2,000 tree house with a lounge and wifi.
Gerrard, 35, who had a glittering career with Liverpool and England, played his last game for his club last May.
He had already signed an 18-month deal with LA Galaxy – where David Beckham also played – a few months before in the January.
The deal, said to be worth £4million a year came with a £16.8m home for him and his girls.
