Normal People writer Sally Rooney returning to BBC with a new adaptation of her work
The author of Normal People, Sally Rooney, is having another one of her books adapted for the BBC, it has been confirmed.
Sally, 29, published her debut novel - entitled Conversation With Friends - in 2017 and followed with Normal People in 2018.
Normal People was adapted into the smash hit series starring Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and viewers have been desperate for a follow up.
It's been reported that Conversation With Friends will be a 12-part series, true to the book, which follows two female college students in Dublin who form an unexpected, sexual relationship with an older married couple, resulting in a pair of love triangles that turn their lives upside down.
Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson will direct it, while Alice Birch will serve as lead writer and Ed Guiney as co-producer.
Guiney had already revealed that the BBC was working on an adaptation of Conversations with Friends back in May.
On the announcement of the new show, which will also stream on Hulu, Guiney said: "We loved working with Hulu on Normal People – they are an inspiring and very talented team and all of us at Element are delighted to be partnering with them again, alongside our friends at the BBC, on the screen adaptation of Sally Rooney's incredible first novel, Conversations with Friends."
The official description of Conversations with Friends reads: "Frances is 21 years old, cool-headed and observant. A student in Dublin and an aspiring writer, at night she performs spoken word with her best friend Bobbi, who used to be her girlfriend.
"When they are interviewed and then befriended by Melissa, a well-known journalist who is married to Nick, an actor, they enter a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Provence, beginning a complex ménage-à-quatre.
"But when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer, the sharply witty and emotion-averse Frances is forced to honestly confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time."
Normal People is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
