Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper ‘hasn’t regained consciousness’ and may never recover
KATE Garraway’s husband Derek Draper hasn’t yet gained consciousness after fighting off coronavirus and may never recover, their friend Jane Moore has said.
Speaking on Loose Women, the 58-year-old Sun columnist said: “Kate’s an incredibly strong and amazing woman but I honestly don’t know how she’s still standing.”
Andrea McLean opened today’s show saying the panel was “sending all our love to our dear friend and colleague Kate Garraway” after Derek spent ten weeks in a coma.
Jane, who interviewed 53-year-old Kate for a heartbreaking interview in The Sun last week, then revealed the family’s latest news.
She explained: “Derek contracted coronavirus and he went to hospital. It looked initially like he might have a Boris Johnson experience and come out largely unscathed, but it’s attacked all his vital organs.
“He’s now Covid free. They’ve brought him out of the coma – they put him in an induced coma – they brought him out of the coma and he’s not regained consciousness yet.
“Every day she’s living with this awful uncertainty. They’re preparing her and saying maybe the new normality is they’re never going to know if he’ll recover.”
She added that Kate had amassed box files full of information about coronavirus and now “knows everything there is to know” about the deadly disease.
Jane said: “The children are being incredibly strong. She’s getting a lot of strength from them.”
She then recalled what Kate said when she asked how she felt when she saw people gathering in parks, risking catching or spreading coronavirus by failing to stick to social distancing rules.
The Loose Women panellist explained: “She said: ‘I will never judge anybody for wanting to lead a normal life.
“‘But all I will say is, this virus – you don’t know where it’s going to go in your body or what it’s going to do to you. Derek had no underlying health issues.'”
Earlier today, Kate’s Good Morning Britain co-stars paid a tearful tribute to her, with Susanna Reid saying: “Before we begin, I think we both just want to send our love to our colleague and friend Kate Garraway.
“We both watched her interview on Good Morning Britain on Friday. Millions of you watched as well as she told you and us all about the situation about Derek.
“Absolutely heartbreaking for the family and then she did an interview in The Sun over the weekend, more details came out.
“So huge, huge love to Kate, she’s going through hell, the family’s going through hell. There is hope still, of course.
“And she said they were hoping for ‘that miracle’ – and we’re all hoping with her. So huge love to Kate.”
