While season one is still airing on ITV, a second series was already in the works on location in Amsterdam.

But appearing on today's This Morning, Maimie explained how production had been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: "We were supposed to be filming now. We should have started the second series this week. "We're gutted. It's been an amazing response and such huge audiences.

"It's lovely when you're immensely proud of something and I think as a team we've created something that's the beginning of something brilliant.

The 53-year-old plays streetwise Dutch detective Van der Valk - which was previously portrayed by Barry Foster - and confessed he was nervous the reboot would "go up in flames."

He told the Press Association: “I have played lead roles before but not so much… mainly in my 30s I was doing that kind of thing, not so much in my 40s; it would be much more ensemble like Mad Dogs and stuff, and you spread the load there."

The former Hustle star said the feeling of partaking in a lead role reminded him of when he first started acting: “I think I felt it throughout the whole job, really."

He added: “Certainly in my younger days, I suppose I felt almost fearless when I was at work. But I didn’t have that on this, I suppose I just felt more vulnerable."

Van Der Valk concludes on Sunday, May 10 at 8.20pm on ITV.
