Homeland sets up traumatic season 8 finale as Carrie faces impossible choice with deadly consequences
HOMELAND’S last ever episode is set to be an explosive finale as Carrie Mathison faces a sticky situation.
The US spy thriller drew to an end on Showtime in the States at the weekend and will air on Channel 4 this Sunday.
British viewers tuning in to episode The English Teacher will see Claire Danes' character Carrie in a tight spot.
The show will end on a cliff-hanger in which the CIA agent must either set up a war between America and Pakistan or allow close friend Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) to be killed.
Having found out Saul had a female mole inside the Russian government, Carrie could not work out their identity due to a complex communication system hidden inside the spines of old books.
Russian operations officer Yevgeny Gromov told her: "You can still take Saul out of [the] picture.
“I hoped you'd find another way, but like you said, you've tried everything. What's left? Kill Saul.”
Saul's death would mean that his spies are passed down to Carrie, who could successfully destroy them.
Afterwards, Carrie looked shaken and viewers will be left wondering whether she will go through with it.
The show’s boss previously revealed filming struggles had caused a major delay for the final season.
Executive Producer Alex Gansa said: "Shooting in Morocco took way longer than we thought, and we weren't able to accomplish all that we wanted to in Morocco, so we had to come back to the United States.
"That required setting up another production team here, and that delayed us some more months.
"It's literally the season that will never end."
Another factor in the delay was Danes' pregnancy as the actress welcomed her second son, Rowan, with husband Hugh Dancy in August 2018.
Homeland season eight finishes on Channel 4 at 9pm this Sunday.
