Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw warns fans to ‘fasten seat belts’ as Carolyn’s relationship with daughter ‘pushes her to edge’
KILLING Eve star Fiona Shaw has promised fans they’re in for a wild ride in season three of the hit series.
Fiona, who plays MI6 spy boss Carolyn, has revealed the introduction of her daughter Geraldine in the latest season will see her character “pushed to the edge”.
The 61-year-old actress described Carolyn’s relationship with Geraldine – played by Game of Throne’s Gemma Whelan – as “disastrous” and warned fans of the show should “fasten your safety belts” as their turbulent story plays out.
Speaking to , Fiona said she was “astonished” when she read the scenes with her daughter who is introduced after her brother Kenny (Sean Delaney) is tragically murdered in the first episode of the new series.
She said: “She [Geraldine] hasn’t on the surface anything to do with the family business. That’s not her interest.
“You’ll find quite quickly that she’s the one who got away. But she comes back and she tries to organise the household in a more organised way, which Carolyn really doesn’t like.
Fiona added: “It’s good because you get the family dynamic of there is love there but whether there’s actual like there is a difficult thing to say. They’re very different people — put it like that. So there’s plenty room for complication in this.”
Carolyn and Geraldine are like chalk and cheese unlike the spy boss’ relationship with her son Kenny.
Fiona said: “There is a part where Carolyn says, ‘In some ways, you were always your father’s child, and Kenny (Sean Delaney) was mine.’
“For all the peculiarity of their relationship, Kenny and his mum have a lot in common. They’re both slightly obsessive and maybe slightly on the spectrum, and they go on very well in their silence.”
The Harry Potter actress said Geraldine’s relentless “self-help and emotional talk” is like “a red rag to a bull” for her mother, adding “it drives Carolyn mad!”
Producers had promised this would be the most personal season of the popular series yet and would look much more in depth at the main characters.
Killing Eve executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle said: “It’s the most personal season — and the most emotionally rocky season.”
Series three of the award winning spy drama picks up after Villanelle (Jodie Comer) dramatically shoots Eve (Sandra Oh), the spy who’s been trailing her, in Rome leaving her for dead.
The show will likely pick up on how Eve survived the shooting and show how Villanelle will also be out for revenge against Konstantin and Carolyn in season 3 after being used and manipulated by them.
Eve’s husband Niko is also likely to ask her for a divorce, after Villanelle savagely killed his co-worker and lover.
