Killing Eve show boss explains how Eve survived being shot by assassin Villanelle ahead of season three premiere
KILLING Eve's boss has lifted the lid on how Eve survived being shot by assassin Villanelle ahead of the season three premiere.
Head writer of the popular BBC drama, Suzanne Heathcote, has opened up about season two's finale which saw Villanelle shoot Eve in the back and leave her for dead.
Trailers for the upcoming series have shown Eve survived the shooting and is alive and well - which has left fans racking their brains to try and figure out exactly how she managed to stay alive.
Suzanne told : "It was a conundrum. We had to sort of sit there and figure it out for a while."
The writers all worked together to come up with something they were all happy with so that the storyline "maintained Villanelle’s brilliance, and yet allowed us to keep Eve alive, which was essential.”
She went on to add: "With Eve, I felt that she would’ve bled out, it was sort of an act of God, almost. It was a miracle, really.
"The only way to maintain Villanelle’s integrity and have Eve survive was that Villanelle left her, she would’ve bled out, it was a matter of minutes, and she was discovered by tourists.
"It was touch-and-go, and she just managed to survive.”
She also explained why Villanelle decided to shoot her in the first place, saying control was one of the main factors that drove her to do it.
She said: “I think she lost control of that relationship, and for Villanelle, control is everything.
"That’s why she committed that act of violence. She didn’t want Eve dead, but at the same time, she couldn’t have Eve leave her."
Season two saw many twists and turns - and of course murder - and even saw Eve and Villanelle team up.
Eve’s relationship with her husband Niko also deteriorated further with him moving out.
Not only that, her mysterious MI5 boss Carolyn Martens also kept us guessing about who she really works for – is it the government or is it The Twelve?
Season two's finale saw both of them standing in an amphitheatre in Rome, as they were both on the run after Eve killed The Twelve’s agent Raymond and Villanelle learned the truth about Konstantin.
When Eve said she had to go home and couldn’t run off into the sunset “like Bonnie and Clyde,” Villanelle decided to shoot her.
But fans of the female-led spy drama haven't got much longer to wait for the new series, after the BBC confirmed the programme will return two weeks earlier than planned due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
US viewers can expect to watch the much-anticipated episode of the new season on April 12, 2020.
UK fans will be able to stream it on the BBC iPlayer from 6am the next day (April 13).
