SAVE Me Too creator and star Lennie James has reassured fans that he is already “putting together” the next series.

The screenwriter and actor – who appears in the hit Sky Atlantic thriller – said a third season was on the cards, even if it wasn’t totally formulated.

James, 54, said: "I'm putting it all together, or trying to in my head [although I’m] not quite there yet.

"But yes, I have thoughts about carrying on the story because, as I said, this was always an idea for a returning television series and I don't feel quite that I'm finished with these characters.”

Save Me Too stars James as Nelly, a man whose life is turned upside down when his estranged daughter Jody disappears.

The official synopsis for Save Me Too reads: "It's 17 months since Nelly Rowe rescued vulnerable young woman Grace whilst searching for his missing daughter Jody.

"Could Grace provide clues to Jody's fate, or will she derail Nelly's desperate quest to find his daughter – with potentially terrible consequences for him and those around him?"

However, James insists the next series won’t focus on Nelly.

The Line of Duty and The Walking Dead actor told : "It's got to be an idea that encompasses all the characters, because it's not just about the continuing adventures of Nelly and his search for his child.

"It's also about what that search or what that journey does for the people around him. So, if I can find one that brings the gang together, then absolutely [there'll be a season 3]."

James recently opened up on the difficult and traumatic scenes from the show's second series.

The BAFTA-award winner admitted: “There is one particular scene, even though I wrote it and created it, every read through and rehearsal, every time I read it out loud, I found it very hard to control my emotions.

“It got to the point where after a few takes my director saved me. He said, I don’t think we should do this again.”

Save Me Too airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic. The full series is now available on Sky on Demand and NOW TV.
