Calm With Horses introduces you to a future megastar in Cosmo Jarvis

THIS visceral and compelling crime drama makes you wince at the brutal violence on display – and introduces you to a future megastar.

Cosmo Jarvis is Douglas, a disgraced ex-boxer now working as a heavy for the Devers, an unpleasant family of drug dealers.

A young family member, the snidey Dympna (the ever watchable Barry Keoghan) is assigned as his chaperone, seeing that his tasks are carried out with suitable vigour and loading Douglas up on cheap coke to make sure he follows through.

In his personal life, Douglas has a young, severely autistic son with his ex Ursula (Niamh Algar) who he is trying to connect with.

With the bills for a specialist school looming, and having been tasked with doling out a gruesome punishment to a man who has raped one of the Devers’ nieces, the pressure begins to bottleneck and the whole film veers towards a grimly inevitable conclusion.

Shot in a dark blue-ish hue, nothing about the film could be classed as pleasant to watch, yet I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.

Part of the reason is the incredible star quality of its lead.

Musician-turned-actor Cosmo Jarvis is utterly mesmerising and this role will be looked back on as pivotal for his career.
