RIO and Kate: Becoming a Stepfamily viewers broke down in tears as Kate comforts sobbing stepdaughter at her mother's grave.
The show follows the Ferdinand family as Kate Wright integrated into the family and becomes a stepmum to his three children, Lorenz, 13, Tate, 11, and Tia, eight.
Taking place in the lead up to their wedding, the deeply personal film looked at the emotionally complicated dilemmas they faced following Rio's wife Rebecca's passing in 2015.
In one heartbreaking scene, youngest child Tia breaks down in tears as she lays flowers and balloons on her mother's grave.
As she cries, Kate wraps her arms around her and comforts the crying girl.
Fans found Kate's compassion extraordinary - with many breaking down in tears.
One person said: "In tears. @xkatiewright is such a strong woman, really admire her "
A second added: "You can’t help but shed a few tears whilst watching #RioandKate 😢 Kate’s doing an amazing job, it’s all coming from the heart ❤️ @rioferdy5 she’s a gooden"
A third remarked: "5 minutes in and there's tears. #RioAndKate well done @rioferdy5 @xkatiewright
👏 wouldn't mind the tears so much if I didn't cut Scotch bonnets tonight 😭 serious tho, very enlightening and the fact Kate is a year younger than me and taken on such responsibilities, kudos hun ❤️"
Kate revealed how she joins the kids in writing cards for Rebecca on Mother's Day, saying she's "grieving for someone she never knew".
The family write cards for Rebecca and Rio's mum, Janice, who died of cancer two years later.
Kate said: "It's Mother's Day and the kids write letters to their mum and their gran, which we laminate and take to their graves so they last longer.
"I always write a message from me - after all, I am looking after and bringing up her children with Rio."
But when they arrived at the graves, Tia broke down in tears, saying: "I miss Mummy and Nanny."
Kate responded: "You miss Mummy and Nanny? They want you to be happy though don't they? They're always with you, they just can't be with you in person can they? Give me a cuddle."
Kate then opened up about the struggles of how to comfort Tia, saying: "If Tia says, 'Why is my mum not here, why can she not come back?' what do you say?
"When you get to the age of seven is when you start understanding life isn't a fairytale and people do die and they're not gonna come back.
"So she's going through a bit of a process now where she is trying to understand it all. And she really misses her mum, and she really misses her nan, and she can't understand why her mum won't come back."
Speaking about why they wanted to do this documentary, they jointly told the BBC: "The positive response to Being Mum And Dad in 2017 and the way it helped others going through a similar situation was overwhelming.
"For that reason, we were both compelled to tell the next chapter in our lives together.
"We hope Becoming A Step Family will give a unique insight into step families and the journey through grief, whilst also providing an intimate look at our lives together."
