The family write cards for Rebecca and Rio's mum, Janice, who died of cancer two years later.

Kate said: "It's Mother's Day and the kids write letters to their mum and their gran, which we laminate and take to their graves so they last longer.

"I always write a message from me - after all, I am looking after and bringing up her children with Rio."

Kate responded: "You miss Mummy and Nanny? They want you to be happy though don't they? They're always with you, they just can't be with you in person can they? Give me a cuddle."

Kate then opened up about the struggles of how to comfort Tia, saying: "If Tia says, 'Why is my mum not here, why can she not come back?' what do you say?

"When you get to the age of seven is when you start understanding life isn't a fairytale and people do die and they're not gonna come back.

"So she's going through a bit of a process now where she is trying to understand it all. And she really misses her mum, and she really misses her nan, and she can't understand why her mum won't come back."

Speaking about why they wanted to do this documentary, they jointly told the BBC: "The positive response to Being Mum And Dad in 2017 and the way it helped others going through a similar situation was overwhelming.

"For that reason, we were both compelled to tell the next chapter in our lives together.

"We hope Becoming A Step Family will give a unique insight into step families and the journey through grief, whilst also providing an intimate look at our lives together."
