He explained: "We've been told this morning by our bosses that Virgin Radio is the most listened-to commercial digital network in the country after just a year of our relaunch.

"That was our year-three target. We've also been told this show, the breakfast show here, is the most listened-to digital breakfast show regardless of commercial or not commercial, BBC or otherwise, in the UK.

"We can't believe it but apparently it's true - woo hoo! Thank you."

The station shared the clip on its Instagram account, captioning the vid: "A big THANK YOU to you all! ❤️."

Virgin Radio has had a record-breaking set of results today, reaching 1.53 million listeners - an increase of eight per cent on the previous quarter.

Chris' breakfast show also delivered record audiences with the number of listening hours rocketing by 25 per cent to 5.6 million.

His Virgin Radio UK show is now officially the most listened-to breakfast show on digital radio, including BBC digital channels.

Chris said in a statement: “I am ecstatic in only a year we are No.1. Our plan is simple - give it all we’ve got and have the most fun along the way.”

Virgin Radio's content director Mike Cass added: "We have had an exceptional year and seen huge gains across the schedule.

"Our aim was to be the number one commercial digital station in two years and we are thrilled to have achieved this in half the time.”

Meanwhile, Radio 2's Breakfast Show has lost nearly a million listeners in the first year since Zoe Ball replaced Chris.
