Coronation Street boss plans to bring legendary Bet Lynch back after 17 year absence
CORONATION Street's legendary character Bet Lynch could be about to make a comeback.
The iconic leopard print-wearing barmaid played by Julie Goodyear could be back pulling pints at the Rovers in the near future.
The 77-year-old actress made her first appearance on the cobbles in 1966 and was a main star of the show from 1970 to 1995.
She also returned for special episodes between 2002 and 2003.
And now after 17 years away show bosses how to lure the actress back to her role of barmaid Bet.
Corrie producer Iain MacLeod that producers already talked about a comeback.
"Bet is an icon. The idea of bringing her back is talked about occasionally. As any Corrie viewer would say, she is up there in the pantheon of Corrie greats," he said.
"So it’s always tempting to bring her back."
The show's 60th anniversary is coming up this year and the soap is preparing shock moments for the landmark in December.
"We won’t be doing a live episode. It’s time to do something different. But it won’t be any less ambitious," Iain said.
"We are going to be telling the stories in a slightly different way. It’s important when you’re celebrating a milestone that you don’t purely look back at times past, but also find a way to renew and look to what the next 60 years might be like."
Iain's predecessor, Kate Oates, also teased Julie's return back in 2018 - so it appears there's a role in upcoming scripts for her.
Back then, speaking to , Kate said: “I bet Julie would be great on the show.
“If the story fitted, then why not? It could happen…”
Kate went on to say Bet – who worked on the ITV soap for 25 years – was a “modern day icon” and joked she even shared her love of flamboyant clothes.
Meanwhile, despite the potential for a Bet-filled Weatherfield bar sometime soon, this may be at the expense of another Corrie stalwart.
The Sun Online has previously reported how bosses plan to mark the 10,000th episode of the tea-time soap with the dramatic exit of one cast member.
A significant chunk of the Weatherfield crew are heading to the northern seaside town, famed for the Pepsi Max rollercoaster and Kiss Me Quick T-Shirts for the sombre scattering of Rita Tanner's ex husband's ashes.
Long-time fans of the ITV soap will recall how Dennis made a brief return to the Street in 2014 but bosses have killed him off for good to mark the 10,000th episode.
And it appears one character will become so taken with the rough diamond 'Vegas of the North' resort they will never again return.
