David appears to be dressed as a trainspotter for the gag, which sees him also play one of the show's wannabe stars.

Asked what his dream is as he walks out on stage, he said: "I have this recurring dream where I’m in a sauna with a very small towel on me and Simon Cowell walks in all oiled up."

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly also appear, watching from the wings as David's character performs.

As well as the unflattering portrayal of Simon in a totally open white shirt and shades, he dons a gold dress to become Alesha and a glam pink outfit for Amanda.

Not everyone is looking forward to seeing David, as he came under fire yesterday from Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan.

The 52-year-old host said he won't be attending the NTAs because David Walliams is hosting, saying that the comedian "makes his skin crawl".

The pair have a long-running spat that started after David replaced Piers Morgan on Britain's Got Talent.

He said in an interview with the : "I’d rather stay at home and watch Groundhog Day and the host David Walliams makes my skin crawl."

The National Television Awards is tonight at 7.30 pm
