Mary Berry criticises Britain for being a nation of takeaway lovers and insists she’s never had fast food
TV COOK Mary Berry has criticised Britain for being a nation that “orders in and eats out”.
The ex-Great British Bake Off judge, 84, repeated her assertion she has never ordered a takeaway, saying she does not see the need.
She added: “We want to get people cooking at home. We’re a nation that orders in and eats out.
“I have never had a takeaway. Why should I? I can muster up things very quickly and there are many things that you can buy to help you if you are busy and which don’t cost that much extra, like grated cheese.
“If you are in a hurry you can pay a little bit more for it and get food on the table quicker.”
In an interview with My Weekly magazine, Mary said she did use the odd short cut when cooking and often used dried rather than fresh pasta.
She was speaking ahead of the launch of BBC1’s Best Home Cook. She is a judge on the show, which will be presented by Claudia Winkleman.
Claudia, 48, who also co-hosts Strictly Come Dancing, added: “I love straightforward things — lots of chicken and stuff I can throw in a pan. And I do a mean chilli con carne.

Mary is among the BBC’s best-paid — and most popular — stars. She said: “It’s lovely when people call me a national treasure — it makes me feel as if I’m doing the job properly.
“But really, the biggest compliment is when I’m in the supermarket and someone says, ‘I make your lemon drizzle cake and I love it’.”
