EastEnders fans left screaming as Louise Mitchell tries to smother baby Peggy to death

EASTENDERS viewers were left screaming in horror tonight after Louise Mitchell tried to smother baby Peggy to death.

The tortured mum, who has been living with the knowledge she helped send the child's dad Keanu Taylor to his 'death', snapped in Monday night's episode.

She was shown grabbing a cushion from her sofa and slowly going to press it over the crying tot's face.

However, luckily her cries from inside No.55 were heard by her mum Lisa, who happened to be passing.

Louise yelled at the child as she didn't let up her sobbing: "This is on purpose. You know I'm a bad mum. You can sense it."

She then cried hysterically into the cushion - before lowering it over her child.

With just moments to spare, Lisa burst in, shouting: "Lou. No. No."

Brought back to her senses, Louise replied: "I'm sorry. I'm sorry." She replied: "I know darling. Mum's here."

However, viewers couldn't believe what they were seeing, with one tweeting: "LOUISE NO."

Another said: "Get her help Lisa!"

Lisa soon found out why Louise was so hysterical, after telling her: "You could have killed her. You could have killed your baby."

Just as the credits rolled, her daughter replied: "Like we killed him? Keanu's dead, mum. We killed him and it's all my fault."

Keanu, of course, is far from dead - having skipped the country after Martin Fowler and Linda Carter helped him fake his own death.
