James Corden and Ruth Jones’ sitcom received the biggest audience since the 2009 final of Britain’s Got Talent when Susan Boyle was pipped by dance group Diversity.

On Christmas Day 12.31m tuned in to the show about an Essex-Wales romance.

It even beat the Strictly Come Dancing final and was the most watched Christmas show of the decade.

The biggest December 25 show before then was in 2008 Wallace & Gromit’s A Matter of Loaf and Death which attracted 14.3m.

James, 41, and Ruth, 53, have both hinted at more being made after they decided to bring back the show following its last episode ten years ago.

Actor Oscar Hartland, who played their on-screen son Neil the Baby, said: “I did ask James in the process of filming. He said it’s just what the people want.

“Me, I would love it to happen.

The hour-special concluded with Ruth’s Nessa proposing to James’ Smithy.

She said: “I do say never say never, as while we did make it work that was after three years of trying to find time when we could sit down and write it.

“Obviously with the way it ends, there is room for more.”
