Netflix’s You star Penn Badgley admits he wasn’t happy with season two’s shock ending – as he confirms season three
NETFLIX’S You star Penn Badgley has admitted he initially wasn’t happy with season two’s shock ending – before accidentally confirming season three.
The 33-year-old actor plays a sadistic stalker who killed the woman he loved during the show’s first season.
*Major Spoilers ahead for You series two*
The second series sees Joe move to Los Angeles and become Will, before falling for a woman called Love.
However, the series ends with Love – played by Victoria Pedretti – revealing she has an equally dark side and kills people too.
Speaking about his initial reaction to the shock twist, Penn told : “When I found out where it was headed, I was kind of crestfallen because, just selfishly, I wanted there to be a more positive resolution.
“But just like Beck dying in the first season, I realised that this was the most accurate, the most reflective of reality, the most responsible to be like, ‘No, Joe doesn’t get to have that.’”
In fact, Penn eventually thought the shock ending was perfect for his character.
He explained: “He’s not actually a person who just needs somebody who loves him. He’s a murderer! “He’s a sociopath. He’s abusive. He’s delusional. And he’s self-obsessed.
“You can’t fool yourself into thinking that he just needs somebody who’s right for him. Nobody’s right for him! So actually, the ending’s perfect.”
But the ‘perfect ending’ doesn’t mean the stage hasn’t been set for season three, with Penn slipping up during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Speaking about Love, he said: “She doesn’t appear to be the same kind of predator. She doesn’t appear to be the same kind of… you know, dare I say, in the third season – oh, god!”
Realising his mistake, Penn put his head in his hands as the interviewer asked what he knew about series three.
Trying to cover his tracks, he replied: “I literally know nothing about the third season.”
But when pressed further, he said: “Technically I can’t… I mean, like, unofficially?” before nodding his head.
You series two is available to stream on Netflix now.
