Little Women review: Saoirse Ronan’s performance is truly magnificent – do not miss this wonderful movie

WRITER and director Greta Gerwig presents a glorious and beautifully acted adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel.

Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet head an all-star cast which includes Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Aussie Eliza Scanlen.

The film follows the lives of four sisters — Amy, Jo, Beth and Meg — as they come of age in New England in the aftermath of the American Civil War.

The story centres around Jo (Ronan), the eldest of the March sisters, as she learns to make her way in a world where women are expected to marry young and well, and never have to worry about earning their own money.

This is a sensational imagining from Lady Bird director Gerwig, illustrating for today’s young viewers how issues of feminism, race and equality have been championed in literature for much longer than most would probably imagine.

There is also a wit and heart to this film that may surprise a modern audience.

It truly is one of the greatest adaptations of Alcott’s much-loved story.

Opting for a non-linear narrative, Gerwig has managed to inject something new into this timeless story without taking anything away from the original text.

Don’t be surprised to see Gerwig pitted against her beau (Noah Baumbach) for the coveted Best Director Oscar next year.
