A WEEK after Marriage Story – Noah Baumbach’s ode to love and all its foibles – British actor Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey, Knightfall) offers his own take, albeit this version is rawer, more fragile.
Directing your own partner in such a film is no mean feat, yet he and Canadian Tatiana Maslany (said partner) are thoroughly impressive.
Set in North Wales over the course of six years, it depicts the gradual decaying of Jenna and Leon’s romance.
They are Americans living overseas, struggling to cope after the honeymoon period has legged it.
Cullen shows confidence in allowing the camera to unfussily observe long conversational scenes.
Less is more – and the movie is all the better for it.
Even more impressively, the entire film was shot in a whirlwind nine days.
This doesn’t shy away from the misery of love gone wrong.
But neither will it put you off the whole idea completely.
The couple’s fate is left deliberately open-ended in this beautifully presented film.
Cullen is most definitely one to watch.
