PAN-SFORMATION

His Dark Materials Pan ‘plot hole’ leaves BBC viewers baffled after vicious beating from Mrs Coulter

HIS Dark Materials left fans scratching their heads after they spotted a moment between Lyra and Pan they claimed made no sense.

The BBC fantasy drama, based on the books by Phillip Pullman, took a dark turn this week as the terrifying Mrs Coulter beat Lyra into submission with her golden monkey daemon.

Taking to Reddit, one user wrote: “Right, I can’t be the only one confused the children on His Dark Materials.

“If their daemons can turn into anything, why don’t they make use of it and fight back?” they went on.

“Pan could’ve wiped the floor with that monkey if he turned into a big cat or some other kind of predator.

“Also, all these kids getting kidnapped – why not turn your daemons into an army of formidable animals and break out? An elephant would’ve made light work of that door. Just saying.”

The post soon received hundreds of upvotes as others chipped in with messages of agreement.

“EXACTLY! Pan could turn into a horse and let Lyra jump on his back rather than legging it in the street,” one wrote.

“I was literally screaming the same thing at the TV when she took that beating,” another added.

While a third simply quipped “facts” alongside a string of thumbs up emojis.

The variety of daemons certainly leaves a discrepancy in terms of vulnerability, as viewers discovered in the latest episode.

A journalist was murdered with ease after her butterfly daemon was crushed in the hands of a magisterium official.

The assassination came after the reporter tried to warn Lyra about the nefarious institute children were being sent to in the north.

His Dark Materials airs Sundays at 8pm on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
