But speaking at MCM Comic Con in London on Sunday, Simon admitted his wife Maureen McCann was equally as shocked, so much so she shed more than a few tears over his appearance.

He said: "I did have to get very, very skinny for a job I did this year and my wife was in tears about that, because I kind of got down to just skin and bone, so she wasn’t happy about that."

Simon admitted the weight loss wasn't him suddenly becoming a method actor like some of his peers, adding: "She always grounds me. She stops me from being a head-in-the-clouds actor p***k.

"As soon as I get home I’m picking up the dog s**t in the courtyard, though I do have a courtyard which is p**ckish, to say the least."

Simon's jaw-dropping weight loss was unveiled in March in a shirtless snap posted on social media by his personal trainer Nick Lower.

Nick wrote alongside it: "#SimonPegg 6 month body transformation for #InheritanceMovie.

"The brief for this role was lean, VERY lean. It required a specific body shape & look."

Sharing the post, Simon added at the time: "Also occasional mild grumpiness..."

Inheritance is an independent thriller and will see Simon star alongside Lily Collins and Chace Crawford.

Simon previously told GQ the response to the weight loss picture was "weird".

He said: "The response from that picture was so weird... And the thing is, it wasn’t meant to be an aspirational thing.

"It was a snapshot that my trainer took and I really didn’t expect the furore that followed.

"All I can think of is that people still think of me as that schlubby guy from Shaun Of The Dead."
