In an early episode from the season, an autopsy found the teen had died from a blunt force trauma and had a hole in the back of his head, with fans (and his classmates) thinking he'd been shot.

But in the series finale, it was revealed he actually died from drowning, after having his leg and arm broken by school rival Zach in a fight on a dockside before Alex pushed him in the water.

Because of his injuries, Bryce drowned, but the scenes left fans baffled considering the previous autopsy comments, and took to Twitter in their droves to hit out at show bosses.

One wrote: "If u ain’t seen 13 reasons why finale scroll past, But am I the only one confused at the ending with Bryce Drowning but the autopsy in the first few episodes said he died of blunt force trauma have we all just forgotten?????"

"Jessica’s ex pushed him to the lake.. but why was his body found with a bullet in the head?"

They weren't the only ones confused by the apparent switch in cause of death, with another viewer tweeting: "I know im late and some probably haven’t watched it but... I just finished 3rd season of 13 reasons why and can someone please explain how tf it goes from Bryce getting shot to him dying by drowning!?!? Like did they forget the COD mid season or????"

A fellow fan of the show added: "It was announced that Alex killed Bryce #spoilers that he pushed him into the lake.. but in Ep4 Justin said to Clay he got shot.

"What happened as that wasn’t addressed in the final episode???"

Actor Justin Prentice, who played Bryce, previously revealed how he found out his character was going to be killed off.

He told Entertainment Weekly: "Showrunner Brian Yorkey and I grabbed lunch, he sat me down and he was like, ‘Yeah, you’re going to die.’

“I was taken aback for a second. I’m like, ‘Did I do something wrong? Is this why you’re killing me off this show?’

“But he was like, ‘We have this great idea for this season’ and he talked me through Bryce’s arc and I was like, ‘I think this is going to be fantastic. I’m on board. Let’s do it.’”
