Emmerdale bosses begged Sammy Winward to come back as Katie Sugden’s ghost but star says she’s GLAD soap killed her

SAMMY Windward says Emmerdale bosses begged her to come back to the soap as a ghost - but she turned them down because she was too busy.

The star, 33, played Katie Sugden on the ITV soap for 14 years before being murdered by her ex-lover in a dramatic love triangle twist.

Just a year after her character was killed off, Emmerdale bosses planned for her to appear to her husband Andy Sugden. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be.

She told Inside Soap: "About a year after I left Emmerdale, they asked me to return as a ghost!

"It was for a scene or two with Andy. I was working, so I couldn't fit it in. But I'd be up for a cheeky little ghost appearance now - if only Kelvin was still in Emmerdale!"

While fans have been clamouring for Katie to make a surprise return to the farm, Sammy is happy her character is gone forever so she has no choice but to stay away.

The actress continued: "I get asked all the time when I'm coming back to Emmerdale, and I'm like, 'I'm dead!'

"But then again, Harold Bishop fell off a cliff in Neighbours and survived. I'm glad they killed Katie off - it meant it was more final for me. Now, I'm not always wondering if I should go back!"

Sammy played Katie from 2001 to 2015 before she was murdered by her ex-lover and brother-in-law Robert Sugden.

The pair had a steamy affair that threatened her relationship with eventual husband Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher).

However, it wasn't until Katie discovered Robert having an affair with his now-husband Aaron Dingle that things turned violent - and she was killed by her ex-lover.

Things are not looking good for Robert as he faces life imprisonment for brutally attacking his sister Victoria's rapist, Lee.

Sammy now hosts acting classes for kids and is also appearing in her first panto this year, as Cinderella at Liverpool's Epstein Theatre.
