Who is Libby Clegg?

Libby Clegg is a double gold-winning Paralympian from Scotland.

She was born Elizabeth Clegg on March 24, 1990, in Stockport.

The talented athlete has represented both Scotland and Great Britain throughout her career.

She's appeared at three Paralympic Games - and is hoping to add a fourth at Tokyo 2020.

She was part of Team GB at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing where she won the silver medal for the T12 100 metre race with guide Lincoln Asquith - a feat she repeated at London 2012 with Mikail Huggins.

She went on to win two golds in Rio at the 2016 Paralympic Games with her guide Chris Clarke, one in the 100m T11 and a second in T11 200m.

It was there that she broke the world record for the 200 metres.

She has competed in the T11 and T12 events - T stands for Track and the numbers 11 and 12 are for visual impairment.

T11 is for athletes with the lowest visual acuity and/or no light perception.

Libby was reclassified from T12 to T11 before the Rio games due to deterioration in her sight.

This resulted in her running with a blindfold for the first time to make it a fair playing field.

Among her many accolades, in 2017 Libby was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year Honours list for her services to athletics and charity.

Libby is a qualified massage therapist and shares her story with school groups as well as at corpoarte events.

What is Libby's disability?

Libby has a deteriorating condition in her eyes called Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy.

The symptoms of Stargardt's includes vision loss in childhood or adolescence, light sensitivity and colour blindness.

For most people, vision loss progresses slowly over time to 20/200 or worse but it is rare to become completely blind.

It is an inherited condition and Libby only has relative peripheral vision in her left eye.

She is registered as blind and has a guide dog, Hattie, a black retriever-Labrador cross.

However she made it through and in the final performed her Paralympic-themed skate to perfection, leaving Jayne Torvill in tears.
