SANDITON'S steamy sex scenes left some viewers squirming as the period drama's X-rated antics went up a level last night.

ITV has been airing an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel in its Sunday night slot - yet some have been left taken aback by the raunchy scenes and "scarred for life" as a result.

Viewers took to Twitter to air their shock after a scene between Sir Edward Denham, played by Jack Fox, and Clara Brereton, played by Lily Sacofsky, saw them tear each others clothes off in a matter of seconds.

They didn't seem to care about the cold, hard marble floor underneath them as red-hot passion took over.

The curtains of the huge mansion windows were left ajar with the imposing candlestick holders left lit, to add a seductive glow to the action.

Yet the scenes - which came shortly after Edward sought to find Lady Denham's will - left some stunned, and one took to social media to muse: "I still can’t get the sex scene out of my head I’m scared for life."

A second put: "That dance scene was 100 times more erotic and hotter than that creepy sex scene."

A third surmised: "Well - bloomers were not sexy or conducive for sex."

Meanwhile, others took a contrasting stance, with one posting: "The chemistry was fire this whole scene."

Another flagged the stunningly choreographed dance routine earlier in the show, and put: "Yeah sex is great and all but have you ever had a five minute tension-filled dance with someone during the Victorian era?"

Sanditon was Jane Austen's last novel, with the first 11 chapters written prior to her death in 1817.

When she passed away, the novel was left unfinished.

It follows Charlotte Heywood, a spirited and impulsive woman who moves from her rural home to Sanditon, a sleepy fishing village attempting to reinvent itself as a seaside resort.

Meanwhile, the eight-part TV series is written by Emmy and Bafta-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies, who has also worked on War and Peace, Les Misérables, as well as Pride and Prejudice.
