Called Lines We Cross, the episode has been described as "gross, scary and big budget" by Decider, which added the series was "off to a promising start" after a rocky patch a few seasons back.

Meanwhile ComicBook wrote: "Following up a very strong ninth season, the upcoming batch of episodes prove The Walking Dead is aiming to take its throne back.

"If the coming conflict is handled as well as the premiere episode, longtime fans are in for a treat while those who were discouraged from watching might be interested in getting back on board."

Den of Geek agreed, writing: "While past season premieres have mostly been content with serving up big action sequences, bombastic calls to war, and a fake out or two, 'Lines We Cross' gets to the meat of the story quickly and efficiently, setting up some of the major conflicts that will undoubtedly drive the first half of the season."

Series 10 marks the first time Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, won't be listed as a series regular.

At the end of series nine, Rick was presumed dead by his family following a bridge explosion as he tried to save survivors.

While viewers know Rick was saved by the mysterious CRM organisation, his family are oblivious and its up to them to keep his memory alive during series 10.

Meanwhile Andrew will return as Rick in a movie version of The Walking Dead, with a number of films already mapped out for the character.

She added: "We'll also get to showcase good, old-fashioned Michonne being a bad***.

Her words add to her previous comments about Michonne's exit earlier this year, when she said: "[Her exit] will obviously have some fallout and emotional consequences, but there's a very particular way in which it all happens, so hopefully it'll be surprising and interesting for our fans."
