CALL The Midwife fans were distraught after a much-loved character left the drama.

Nigel the cat, first introduced during the 2023 Christmas special, died in his beloved Cyril Robinson's arms.

In the latest episode of the BBC drama, midwife Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry) spun into a panic when she found Nigel in a bad way.

The shivering former stray was refusing to eat or drink, but Cyril wasn't giving up hope.

Wrapping his furry pal in a blanket, Cyril promised Nigel that he would help him "back on his feet".

Gently stroking the cat in the armchair, he said: "In the morning, I'm going to take you to the vet.

"I don't even know where the vet is, because you were never sick before.

"You're always full of life and adventure - marauding your way all over Poplar," he laughed quietly.

"Coming home and telling me all about it: what mice you killed, what walls you walked along. We need to get you back on your feet. I need to see you sitting on your step in the sunshine, waiting for me.

Cyril's voice wobbled: "I need you to last until the morning so I can take you to the vet."

Tragically, when Cyril wakes up with Nigel still wrapped in his arms, he is heartbroken to find the cat had died during the night.

"Don't leave me Nigel," he sobbed.

Fred Buckle, played by Cliff Parisi, buried Nigel in the gardens - adding flowers to the tiny grave.

"I'm not sentimental about animals, but I'm going to miss his little face," Fred confessed.

Cyril said: "We were strays together, he had no-one and I had no-one when we met", before adding: "We made a home together."

Fans of the show were in tears over Nigel's passing, with one writing on social media: "Call the Midwife has had some tear jerkers but a poorly cat is one step too far."

"NIGEL THE CAT NOOOOOOOOOO," echoed a second.

"Cannot believe that I have just openly wept because the cat from Call The Midwife has died," said another.

"I'M CRYING OVER A FICTIONAL CAT," chimed a fourth.

"The flowers on Nigel's grave. Tonight's Call the Midwife has to be the saddest one ever," a fifth added.
