A HIT horror series has been axed - despite critical acclaim and a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

The show only made its debut last year but has been brutally binned by TV execs after one season.

Hysteria! won't be returning for more episodes at streaming giant Peacock.

Julie Bowen, Anna Camp, Emjay Anthony and Chiara Aurelia led the cast, which focused on a heavy metal band.

A synopsis for the series reads: “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realise they can capitalise on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.”

Hysteria! also starred Kezii Curtis, Nikki Hahn, Bruce Campbell, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North, Elijah Richardson, Milly Shapiro, Allison Scagliotti, and Jessica Treska.

Despite its short-lived run, the show achieved critical acclaim and scored an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score.

However, it's unclear what viewer ratings were for Hysteria! as Peacock don't release figures.

The show was originally commissioned in August 2022 but was halted due to the Hollywood writers' strike.

Only a few episodes were shot before production shut down, but the series resumed in 2023.

Hysteria! remains available to scream now on Peacock.
