Behind the headlines, Paul was a sweet, vulnerable, big-hearted guy

Paul Danan may have grabbed his share of column inches over his all too short 46 years, from his colourful love life to his well-documented struggles with addiction, but behind the headlines, there was a very sweet, vulnerable, big-hearted guy.

I’ve met and spoken with Paul many times over the years and have always had a soft spot for him. He was funny, articulate, smart and great company.

Yes, he had his demons, but he was very open about them and was always striving to be a better version of himself.

He was extremely proud of his theatre company, The Morning After, which he set up to help fellow addicts work through their trauma through drama and acting.

While he seemed lost at times, and on several occasions opened up to me about his struggle to be taken seriously in the industry after his private life exploits overshadowed his professional accomplishments, he clearly found a purpose in supporting others and helping them stay on the path of recovery.

There was only one thing Paul was prouder of than his recovery and his theatre company, and that was his son DeNiro.

Paul lit up when he spoke about his boy, and looked forward to spending the weekends with him as he co-parented with the lad’s mum.

His whatsapp photo was him beaming with DeNiro, and he loved to talk about his offspring’s accomplishments and his hopes for his future.

It breaks my heart that DeNiro now has to go through the rest of his life without his dad, and Paul will never see him grow up.

I last heard from Paul at Christmas, when he left me a voicenote saying he had some exciting things planned for 2025.

I told him we’d catch up in the New Year, but sadly we never got the chance to.

I’ll miss you Paul. You were one of life’s good ones.

She wrote: "So shocked and saddened to hear the death of the lovely Paul Danan.

"You were a great man. RIP you lovely soul."

Actor Michael Greco took to social media and shared a photo of Paul.

He penned an emotional tribute, writing: "Truly gutted to read this. Was such a wonderful soul that wanted to bring a smile to everyone he met.

"In this world of falsities and fake people, you were a genuine and true person."

He continued: "R.I.P. Paul, you will be sorely missed by many people."

Vanessa Feltz added a tribute to her social media, writing: "So terribly sad to hear of the premature death of the kind, gifted, lovely man Paul Danan. His last message to me was a cluster of red hearts.

"His sweet soul shone through his troubled spirit. My deepest condolences to his loving family and adored son."

TV presenter Jean Johansson posted a throwback photo of Paul and penned: "Always kind and funny. Sad sad news."

And TV star Hayley Palmer posted a photo of them together, and wrote an emotional tribute, saying: "I'm in absolute bits
Love you forever @pauldanan.

"I can't even believe the news.. I only spoke to Paul a couple of weeks ago! He invited me to a Prodigy Concert and I said 'Paulieeee that's not really my thing!.. and he said I knewwww it wouldn't be!!!!!!'"

Hayley continued: "Paul was a one off character, he was soooo funny! We were great friends and did a Radio Show on Love Sport Radio together and I would fall off my chair with laughter! .... and he was one of the first to reach out to me when I wasn't in a good place last year.

"Last message he said love you and I said love you back x.";

EastEnders star Dean Gaffney wrote: "You had your demons but my god you had a heart of gold... RIP Mr Paul Danan."

And DJ Fat Tony shared a photo of Paul, writing: "This hurts so bad god bless you Paul one of the sweetest men I've ever met what a sad day."

Hollyoaks, too, issued their own poignant tribute online, which was set against a picture of Paul.

It read: "Today at Hollyoaks we are remembering Paul Danan. Paul played the popular Hollyoaks character, Sol Patrick, between 1997 and 2001.

"Paul brought to life Sol's journey from teenage tearaway to leading man with such charm and heart that no matter what trouble Sol was in, you were always on his side. It is a testament to Paul that his character is held with such great affection."

Fans too flooded X with their many tributes after the news of Paul's death broke.

One person wrote: "Saddened to hear of the passing of Hollyoaks and Love Island star Paul Danan he was a good man sending condolences to his family and friends RIP Paul you will be missed."

A second said: "So sad, still so young," and a third person wrote: "Today it's been reported Paul Danan has died. Another Hollyoaks legend!! Another huge loss as I could see Sol returning to visit Jack in the future."

And someone else wrote: "So shocked about Paul Danan, such a big character from my favourite series of celebrity big brother. RIP."

Paul was best known for playing Sol Patrick in Hollyoaks before starring in the original series of Celebrity Love Island in 2005.

The TV star previously opened up on how he nearly “died” over his addiction to vapes.

Paul, who switched to e-cigarettes after years of smoking, said last year it was a “miracle” he is still alive after he collapsed at his parents' home.

The Love Island star had to be given CPR before he was rushed to hospital.

He then spent a week in intensive care, where he contracted pneumonia.
