There are no plans for the drama, which stars Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan, to return in the future - and viewers are devastated.

As storylines that have rumbled on since The Split began six years ago were all tied up, tearful fans were left begging the show's writer Abi Morgan and the Beeb for more.

Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, one pleaded: "Just watched #thesplitbarcelona and all its affirms for me is that we need another series of this brilliant show."

Another added: "That was so beautiful, i’m here sobbing."

A third begged: "I soooooo need another full series of #TheSplit it’s just sooooo Good Pleassseee Abi & BBC."

Others admitted they were "balling" and in "immediate tears".

Someone else used a 'praying hands' emoji, and said: "Really loved #thesplit#thesplitbarcelona it was brilliant but my one complaint is it wasn't long enough. Another series please!"

And another fan demanded: "Thank you #thesplitbarcelona a genuinely lovely ending for one of my favourite shows. I'll miss feeling like an extra member of the family."

Some viewers of the BBC show have questioned whether telly bosses are "seeing what the ratings are" before deciding whether to pull the plug forever or not.

The Split is based around the all-female Defoe family, known for their legal expertise and personal dramas.

It first hit the small screen in 2018 and enjoyed three successful series' before coming to an end in 2022, with Hannah (Walker) and Nathan (Mangan) ending their marriage.

Viewers were gutted, but their sadness was short-lived.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that two new episodes for a mini-series called The Split: Barcelona would air this December.

The two-parter played out this week and focused on Hannah and Nathan's eldest daughter Liv, who was preparing to wed her Spanish boyfriend Gael.

The family's trip to Barcelona wasn't smooth sailing, however, and the show didn't end with a reunion between the former couple.

Instead, Hannah found happiness with new man Archie following a romantic conversation in the darkness on the beach.
