But as he pretends to operate an old camera, David winks - leaving fans convinced his character TV boss Tony Baddingham isn't dead.

Rivals fans had watched as he was left for dead after being hit over the head with a heavy award in the final episode.

The gruesome scenes saw him lying on the floor as blood seeped out from his head.

One fan commented: "The DT wink, tell me he’s alive!"

A second wrote: "He didn't in the book so he shouldn't in the series either."

"Why does everyone think he died? You can't have a show called Rivals with no Rival," said a third.

While a fourth commented: "Guess he's not dead."

As per the original book, the first series of Rivals was set in the fictional county of Rutshire in the 80s.

Long-held grudges bubbled to the surface as the characters vie for business and each others’ affections in the cut-throat world of telly execs.
