Future of ITV’s Midsomer Murders revealed after 23 series – but fans are raging

THE future of Midsomer Murders on ITV has been revealed after 23 series - but fans have been left raging.

The hit crime drama, which stars DCI John Barnaby and Nick Hendrix as DS Jamie Winter, first launched in 1997.

Midsomer Murders last aired in July this year and viewers were left in the dark about when the series would return.

But now it's been confirmed fans will get to see the show's 24th series next year on ITV.

The news comes despite the fact the four new episodes have already been available overseas.

Series 25 of Midsomer Murders has also been commissioned, though fans could be waiting even longer before it hit screens.

Taking to social media, one said: "It's a UK show made for a UK audience (and on UK television for many years) but the station airing don't care less about UK fans. Two years or more we've waited for this episode while every other country has seen it."

A second fumed: "It's ridiculous, there are 5 more episodes not screened yet in the UK of Midsomer Murders and ITV are showing another bloody repeat tonight @ITV @ITVX sort it out."

"@ITVX why are you showing episodes of #midsomermurders in the USA before they are shown in the U.K.?"

Midsomer Murders was adapted by Douglas Watkinson from the Chief Inspector Barnaby book series by Caroline Graham.

John Nettles famously played Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby until his retirement in 2011, with Neil Dudgeon coming in the same year as DCI John Barnaby, Tom's younger cousin.

The beloved detective drama sees the solving of murders that take place in the villages of Midsomer.

Picturesque Causton is the main fictional town, with filming taking place in South Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

• Professor T: Based on a Belgian TV series of the same name, former Death in Paradise lead Ben Miller plays the title character. Professor Jasper Tempest is a criminologist with OCD who helps the police solve crimes. The cast also includes Emma Naomi, Barney White and Andy Gathergood.
• The Beast Must Die: This series follows a mother's grief for her son, who was killed in an accident. Nicholas Blake's novel of the same name has been adapted for the programme. Stars include Cush Jumbo, Jared Harris, Billy Howle and Geraldine James.
• Red Eye: Starring Richard Armitage, Jing Lusi and Lesley Sharp star in this six-part thriller, which mostly takes place  during an all-night flight between London and Beijing. With dead bodies piling up and a mystery to unravel, the heroes must work fast to get to the truth.
• The Twelve: This Australian drama originally aired as a miniseries in 2022, with the episodes dropping in the UK in February 2023. Four months later, the show was renewed for a second season. Jurassic Park star Sam Neill stars in the leading role of barrister Brett Colby.
• Manhunt: Martin Clunes stars in this drama based on true murder investigations. Series one focused on the death of Amélie Delagrange, which took place in 2004, while the second depicted the search for serial rapist Delroy Grant.
