On Monday's instalment, viewers saw quiz titan Shaun Wallace face 20-year-old student Rachel.

Although she earned £4,000 in her cash builder, Rachel opted for the lower offer of £1,000.

Shaun first stumbled after incorrectly answering that lambswool becomes heavier when it burns.

The correct answer was steel wool, while Rachel extended her lead.

Meanwhile, the next question was ";What part of the Statue of Liberty is approximately 29 feet long?"

Rachel correctly answered the torch, but Shaun had another misstep by choosing the the crown.

A further shock error saw Shaun slip up on: "A corny joke or pun is known by what expression?"

The former Mastermind winner guessed practical joke, rather than the right answer: dad joke.

Lastly, both Shaun and Rachel incorrectly worked out that the US has only one state beginning with T - rather than two.

Frustrated, fans soon took to social media afterwards to vent their anger.

The Chase fans livid as Shaun Wallace 'throws game' by freezing for agonising 15 seconds in 'farcical' flop

One wrote: "Nah, there is no way Shaun Wallace is getting some of these questions, genuinely, wrong.

"He’s being told to put the wrong answers!"

Another commented: "Shaun gets more wrong in this round than the other Chasers usually do in the whole show."

While a third penned: "Has Shaun got any questions right??"

The Chase's best moments

The Chase has been entertaining ITV viewers for years, here are some of the show's most memorable moments...

Bradley Walsh can't stop laughing

The Double Trouble special

  • To celebrate 15 years of The Chase on screens, ITV launched a special 'double trouble' episode where contestants faced off against not one but two of the show's beloved Chasers. And despite the odds, the contestants managed to go home with some cash!

The contestants with famous names

  • Eagle-eyed ITV fans are always quick to spot interesting and sometimes hidden details on the quiz show - but there have been a few times where the names of some contestants have been overtly obvious. For example, one 2017 episode of the quiz show saw Bradley welcome four contestants who were named after Friends characters Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey. Another group of contestants with named from The Simpsons were also grouped together in another episode, much to viewers' amusement.

The Beast's anger gets the best of him

  • During an episode from the 2024 season, Mark Labbett let out his inner beast as he exploded in a fit of anger. Close to losing the competition in the Final Chase, Mark then made a silly mistake and incorrectly answered the question, “Rabbit was a 1980 hit for which Cockney duo?” “Oh, you idiot!” he yelled at himself while slamming the table in front of him. With seconds left on the clock, the Chaser then admitted defeat, moaning "I don't deserve to win."

Yet another remarked: "Surely Shaun is letting her get through. He can't be that stupid. Surely."

In the end, both Rachel and another player, Bev, made it through to the Final Chase.
