A MASTERCHEF The Professionals contestant served up RAW duck heart during last night's show - and the judges refused to eat it.

As part of the skills test, Rachide, Pippa, Cristina and Ian had to impress Gregg Wallace, Monica Galetti, and Marcus Wareing with a dish chosen by celeb chefs.

Rachide and Cristina were tasked with serving up a five-spiced duck breast, with duck heart skewers and an orange sauce, while Pippa and Ian were given Welsh cakes with poached plums, plum syrup and some cheese.

Rachide was first up with Monica saying he "started to lose it" as he continued in the skills test, and the duck was tough.

Self-taught cook Cristina, 22, from Rome was next up - and things got even worse.

As soon as Cristina was given the task, Marcus commented: "I'm not sure if that's a look of confusion or a look of confidence."

Marcus praised her for prepping the duck nicely - but as she put the fried the duck and added the hearts in as well, he questioned her choice of putting them in the pan at the same time.

He said: "She certainly doesn't need the hearts in there just yet, they don't cook at the same time.

The celebrity chef added: "There's no seasoning, there's no five-spice.

"I'm curious as to where the five-spice is going to come into this."

Moments before plating it up, Marcus then said: "That duck's not going to be cooked."

Gregg asked her to plate the food up and as she cut the breast Marcus said: "I'd be very, very, very surprised if that duck breast is cooked."

Cristina then asked Gregg how much time she had left and on being told it was just 30 seconds, she put the duck breast back on the pan.

The MasterChef The Professional host asked: "Is that duck breast not cooked?"

"Not as much as I want it to be," Cristina confessed.

Luckily the duck breast was cooked through - however the five-spice was missing.

However, she wasn't as successful with the heart skewers.

Monica said: "The heart skewers you've cooked them whole - which is fine, but they're raw in the middle.

"You really need to treat it like proper protein...

"Baste it and maybe get it into the oven."

Monica left the heart at the side of the plate and didn't eat it.

Marcus admitted he was completely shocked that the duck was cooked.

Gregg then sent Cristina off saying he was hoping she would bring something "exciting" in the next task.

MasterChef facts

MASTERCHEF has been a staple BBC series for years - but what are the key details?

  • MasterChef launched on BBC One back in 1990
  • It ran until 2001, then was revived in 2005 as MasterChef Goes Large
  • John Torode joined the revamped series in 2005, where he teamed up with Gregg Wallace as hosts
  • Controversial moments? In March 2018, Gregg refused to judge Zaleha Kadir Olpin's stewed chicken rendang dish as he claimed it was 'not crispy enough and could not be eaten.'

However, at the end of the programme, it was revealed that Cristina and Rachide were leaving the competition.

Despite cooking a "delightful" main course, Cristina's dessert was a disaster.

She failed to make a coconut sorbet and her doughnut was "heavy".

Marcus called it "confusing" and Gregg said it didn't work for him.

This meant that Pippa and Ian went through to the quarter final.

Monica and Gregg are returning as judges this year alongside Michelin-star chef Marcus.

This is Gregg's tenth year in the role, and while reflecting on his time on MasterChef, he said: "It's a privilege to be part of this show, it’s forever changing and evolving, so the past 10 years have flown by."

He went on to joke about the lack of appreciation from his co-stars, adding: "Although, Monica and Gregg didn’t get me a cake, a glass of champagne or anything to celebrate!"
