A movie unlike any other you’ll see this year, Emilia Pérez is a crime thriller, comedy, journey of self-discovery and a musical, all rolled into one.

It tells the story of a fearsome Mexican drugs kingpin (Karla Sofía Gascón), who enlists lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) to help fake her own death in order to live as her true self.

An openly trans actor, Gascón’s performance is remarkable but the fact that the film’s four leads (Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz also star) jointly won best actress at Cannes confirms that this is an ensemble success.
