Ex Bake Off host and Traitor’s star land new BBC show about beloved boardgame

The new programme will hit our screens next year

EX Bake Off host Sue Perkins and Traitor’s star Anthony Mathurin have landed a new BBC show about a beloved boardgame.

The pair have joined forces to present a new series of a BBC2 programme called Chess Masters.

According to , bosses at the Beeb are hoping that it will be as successful as The Master Game - which was on our screens between 1976 and 1983.

Sue and Anthony will also be joined by British-chess champion David Howell.

Speaking about her new role Sue said: “I’m so excited to be hosting Chess Masters, where 12 talented amateurs from across Britain are pitted against one another in the world ’s oldest game.

"I’m there to help us understand what’s going on in the players’ heads and make sense of what’s happening on the board.”

Sue added: “We’ve been waiting over 40 years to see chess back on our TV screens.

"Chess Masters will make that wait worthwhile.”

Meanwhile David said: “I cannot wait to invite viewers into the subtleties and intrigues of the game.

“We’ve the perfect selection of contestants, reflecting it is a game for everyone.”

Chess Masters will air next year.

Sue has hosted a number of shows over the years.

Some include Great British Bake Off between 2010 to 2016, Mel & Sue and Let's Sing and Dance For Comic Relief.

GBBO fans were devastated when Sue and co-star Mel Giedroyc quit the beloved programme as it moved over to Channel 4.

A joint statement from the pair said: "We were very shocked and saddened to learn yesterday evening that Bake Off will be moving from its home.

"We made no secret of our desire for the show to remain where it was.

"The BBC nurtured the show from its infancy and helped give it its distinctive warmth and charm, growing it from an audience of two million to nearly 15 at its peak."

They added: "We've had the most amazing time on Bake Off, and have loved seeing it rise and rise like a pair of yeasted Latvian baps.

"We're not going with the dough. We wish all the future bakers every success."

Meanwhile Anthony shot to fame on the second season of The Traitors earlier this year.

The chess coach was a faithful, but was banished from the game on episode six.

The star took to his Instagram page last month to tell his followers to apply to take part int he show.
