Stephen rose to meteoric fame as the co-writer and director of The Office with Ricky Gervais, but also played the role of Terence Turner in Emmerdale even further back in the eighties.

He said of joining the Gogglebox sofa: “I don’t usually allow talking when the TV is on, because I know how much hard work goes into making shows, so I try to give them my full attention.

"But I’m happy to break my own rule for Stand Up to Cancer and join the Gogglebox special this year with my pal Josh Widdicombe."

He added: "The charity does fantastic work, raising money for life-saving research, and it's a privilege to be involved."

Josh, who regularly appeared on the Last Leg said of joining the show: “Stand Up to Cancer is an incredible cause so I am honoured to be involved. I love Stephen and particularly like working with him when we are sitting down so I don’t look like a hobbit next to him."

Other stars are yet to be announced over the week who will join the fight against cancer.

Each year the biggest names in show business appear, and in the past this has included fellow funnyman Bob Mortimer, Jennifer Saunders as well as Richard Ayoade.

And it's not just comedians who will be commenting on fellow tv stars.

In the last ten years, Stand Up To Cancer has raised over £113 million for vital cancer research, which is saving lives.
