EMMERDALE viewers have declared they 'refuse to watch' while pleading with bosses to end a controversial storyline.

For several months, fans of the ITV soap have watched Tom King (James Chase) terrorise his now ex-wife Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper).

Although she broke free from Tom's coercive control, their drama was far from over.

He continued to torment Belle and made her think her beloved dog Piper had been killed.

In recent scenes, Belle took actions into her own hands by plunging an axe into Tom's back as he unleashed fury on her.

The villain survived, although Belle is now facing criminal charges.

Viewers were left extremely frustrated by a recent blunder that could've sent Tom to prison.

His tablet, which Tom used to secretly film Belle from all his hidden cameras in her cottage, came to be in Moira's (Natalie J. Robb) possession.

She logged on and was horrified to see videos of Belle in the bathroom, as well as footage of her panicking after being locked in the house by Tom.

Moira called Belle, having realised this was evidence of abuse - while she left a vague voicemail message before deciding to take the tablet to her.

Considering Moira's active brain tumour, this plan didn’t work out and she ended up having a seizure in a forest.

Her brother Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb) soon found Moira, took her home and got medical help from John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth).

Later on, Moira, Matty and Mackenzie all had a discussion about the tablet when Belle walked in asking what the voicemail was about.

Despite the tablet being discussed not seconds before, none of them mentioned it.

Belle was devastated, convinced she was going to prison for defending herself and Tom would be free to continue his reign of terror.

Taking to social media, viewers shared their general irritation with the storyline, as one wrote: "I’m not watching #Emmerdale until this is resolved.

"The way they have ruined this storyline is unbelievable. I actually can’t watch it it makes me so annoyed."

Another commented: This whole storyline is p*****g me off now it’s gone beyond the realm of plausible and now it’s just farcical END IT I beg #emmerdale."

A third chimed in: "It’s not artistically satisfying. I hesitate to say it’s poor writing but it IS poor plotting.

"Belle going to the police and being believed was such a satisfying plot twist, but tonight’s episode is idiotic twiddling.

"We deserve closure and payoff. #emmerdale"

Most complained about soap storylines

Over the years, all three of the main soaps have featured plots that have had even die-hard fans reaching for their phones and laptops so they can get in touch with Ofcom and complain. Here are just some of the most scandalous...

  • EastEnders baby theft: 13,400 Ofcom complaints - Back in 2011, EastEnders was flooded with complaints when Ronnie Branning (RIP) swapped her baby for the dead son of Kat Moon. The storyline drew the most number of objections in the soap’s long history and saw it roundly criticised by campaigners - with 13,400 flying in over the course of the storyline. Some viewers called it “distressing” and “horrific” but Ofcom ruled the scenes were not "unduly disturbing”.
  • Emmerdale dog-napping: 550 Ofcom complaints - Back in 2016, Ross Barton and Charity Dingle came up with a plan to steal a dog and hold it ransom - but viewers didn’t like it one bit. The nation’s pet owners rose up, insisting the storyline would encourage copycats (not to mention copydogs). Complaints over two episodes totalled a staggering 550 and soap writers quickly learnt you don’t mess with animal-lovers.
  • Coronation Street double murder: 546 Ofcom complaints - Marginally less people complained about a gruesome double murder than objected to a dog-napping plot when Pat Phelan was at the centre of a spate of killings. First he forced Andy Carver to shoot dead Vinny Ashford - and then Pat killed Andy. All the bloodshed back in 2017 proved to be too much for some viewers, who lodged complaints in vast numbers about the “violent scenes”.
  • Yet another added: "I cannot bear how stupidly the scriptwriters are making everyone behave. #emmerdale".

While a fifth remarked: "What a load of b*****s this is.

"Absolutely farcical. Turned what should be a serious subject in to a parody. Writers should hang their heads in shame. #Emmerdale."
