Who are this year’s Bake Off contestants?

Among this year's cohort is a farmer, a mechanic and a fashion designer, all of who will be hoping to avoid a soggy bottom and land a Paul Hollywood handshake.

The diverse collection of amateur bakers features contestants from 19 to 71 ensuring there really is something for everyone this time around.

Let's take a look at who will be baking up a storm:

'I'm buzzing' says Alison Hammond as The Great British Bake Off releases quirky first trailer for new series
  • Andy, 44, Car Mechanic from Essex - Family man Andy has baked his whole life after his mum taught him how to make apple crumble and Bakewell tarts.
  • Christiaan, 33, Menswear Designer from London - When he's not working on clothing designs, green-fingered Christiaan can be found nurturing his vegetable patch and dancing to pop tunes.
  • Georgie, 34, Paediatric Nurse from Carmarthenshire - She grew up admiring her Nonna Rosa in the kitchen and is a self-confessed foodie.
  • Dylan, 20, Retail Assistant from Buckinghamshire - He draws upon his family’s mixed roots - his mother is Indian and his father Japanese–Belgian - when it comes to his baking and he is big on flavour, particularly sweet and spicy ingredients.

Channel 4's best competition shows

Channel 4 boasts a number impressive competition shows, but which ones are really the best?

Four in a Bed

  • Reality competition show Four in a Bed has been airing on Channel 4 since 2010. It follows four couples as they take turns to stay at each others B&Bs and hotels, rating their stays along the way. The couple with the establishment voted best value for money are the winners.

Come Dine With Me

  • Come Dine With Me has been staple British viewing since 2005, providing some outrageous telly moments over the years. Like Four in a Bed, the series moves around to different properties as it follows four contestants as they each host a (supposedly) gourmet dinner party for each other. After each dinner the guests score the host out of 10, will the winner being revealed on the final evening.

The Great British Bake Off

  • Another national treasure, The Great British Bake Off welcomes a group of 12 amateur bakers to put their culinary skills to the test with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith judging their efforts. One contestant is eliminated each week until the final three face off in the last week.

Bake Off: The Professionals

  • Bake Off: The Professionals puts a twist on GBBO, pitting two teams of professional pastry chefs against each other in every episode. It's up to judges Benoit Blin and Cherish Finden to determine who has what it takes to make it through to the final.
  • Gill, 53, Senior Category Manager from Lancashire - Gill turned to baking for comfort following the death of her father in 2015 and has raised money for Alzheimer's charities from her edible creations. Her baking style is steeped in tradition with pies, cakes and pastry all favourites of hers as well as her dad's signature lemon meringue pie.
  • Hazel, 71, Former Nail Technician from Kent - Bingo-loving Hazel's innovative when it comes to her bakes. Her granddaughter’s seventh birthday cake was a carousel with 500 edible diamonds that took Hazel two weeks to make.
  • Illiyin, 31 Birth Trauma Specialist Midwife from Norfolk - Iliyin's multicultural upbringing in Norfolk has influenced her baking. She loves experimenting with flavours from around the world whether it's dried fruits and honey from the Middle East or savoury favourites from the Caribbean.
  • Mike, 29, Farmer from Wilshire - Mike’s baking style is homely and wholesome. He likes making big, hearty bakes using high-quality local ingredients that can satisfy lots of people at parties and gatherings.
  • Sumayah, 19, Student from Lancashire - An entirely self-taught baker, Sumayah meticulously researches her creations, combining myriad techniques and recipes to create an eclectic and imaginative fusion of cultures and flavours.
  • Jeff, 67, Former University Lecturer from New York - He began baking in earnest when his children were little. He learned the basics from his grandmother and Hungarian great-grandmother when he himself was a child.
  • Nelly, 44, Palliative Care Assistant from Slovakia - Nelly grew up with her dad in Slovakia and learned some of her baking skills from her dad. She loves adding the flavours of Slovakian cuisine into her bakes, as well as spices representing her husband’s Pakistani heritage – apple and cinnamon are among her favourite ingredients.
