And viewers are furious she could take the rap for her fiance Reiss Colwell smothering his ex-wife.

They are urging BBC bosses to free Sonia, with the tags SaveOurSonia and FreeTheWalfordOne trending on social media.

Patrick Quinn implored: “BBC EastEnders, please please please can we start a Free the Walford One campaign immediately,”

Matthew Chapman said: “I can’t believe this. I feel like getting the ‘free the fowler one’ placards out!”

A third added: “How am I supposed to work knowing Sonia’s been wrongfully charged for murder.”

The blockbuster storyline echoes the 1998 campaign to Free the Weatherfield One after Corrie character Deirdre Rachid was locked up for fraud.

Then PM Tony Blair even got involved, insisting the fictional miscarriage of justice be probed.

Deirdre was freed after evidence she was innocent emerged.
