BBC Breakfast slammed for ‘pointless’ format shakeup as Jon Kay fronts show SOLO and Carol Kirkwood is replaced

Viewers accused one of the stars of having a 'free holiday'

BBC Breakfast fans were left absolutely raging following a major show shake-up.

Viewers usually expect Jon Kay and Sally Nugent to appear on the sofa together when the pair are on hosting duties.

However, in a huge format change, Jon, 54, was left almost completely alone in the studio.

The long-time presenter appeared in a solo capacity as he fronted the flagship BBC morning show.

Sally, 52, was largely absent from the show last week, much to the ire of BBC Breakfast devotees.

And while the former sports anchor made a return to the show this morning (July 15), she wasn't presenting from her usual spot.

Instead of the warm studio, the star was left out in the cold when she appeared via live link from Berlin.

She appeared slightly downcast, squinting in the German sunlight as she reacted to England's devastating 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euros.

Fans slammed the switch-up, which some thought was completely 'pointless'.

Others even accused the famous anchor of enjoying a 'free holiday' as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Completely pointless sending Silly Sally to Berlin," raged one fan.

Someone else exclaimed: "Sally & John on a free holiday with licence fee payers money, consoling each other after the England result like..."

While a fourth angrily stated: "So Sally is in Berlin? How many reporters are needed? OR is she on a free holiday on our TV FEES…..!? Not impressed"

And a fifth added: "BBCBreakfast they have a presenter out there, why waste cash on flying sally out? It’s not her job anymore."

This came as Carol Kirkwood, 62, also took a seemingly surprise break from the long-running magazine programme.

Who are the current presenters of BBC Breakfast?

The flagship BBC show has had dozens of presenters during its impressive 40 years on air but the current stars are:

Jon Kay - Since 2022

Sally Nugent - Since 2021

Charlie Stayt - Since 2006

Naga Munchetty - Since 2014

Carol Kirkwood - Since 1997

Fans usually relish her sunny demeanour and stylish outfit choices as she presents the latest weather forecasts.

But the fan-favourite meteorologist appeared to be missing from screens as she was replaced by Matt Taylor, 48.
