DONALD Sutherland, known equally for his oddball and dramatic roles over a six-decade Hollywood career, has died at 88.

Sutherland, who gained notoriety for parts in The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, and most recently as President Snow in The Hunger Games series, died on Thursday.

Sutherland was a father of five, including -winning actor Kiefer, veteran CAA Media Finance executive Roeg, actors Angus and Rossif, and daughter Rachel.

Kiefer, 57, mourned his father's death and remembered him as "one of the most important actors" of all time.

"With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," Kiefer wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad, or ugly.

"He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

Born on July 17, 1935, Sutherland shot to fame in 1967 in the war movie classic The Dirty Dozen.

  • His parents, Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, were successful Canadian actors.
