Based on the real experiences of former policeman Tony Schumacher as a bobby on the beat, The Responder tells the story of morally compromised cop Chris Carson navigating the harsh reality of working nights in Liverpool city centre.

Following a successful first series, the Beeb renewed a second season, which premiered last month.

The final episode reached a thrilling climax as fans witnessed Chris, played by Martin, attempting to rebuild his personal life while avoiding the villainous Franny Sutton.

It also marked the final appearance of Bernard Hill, who played Chris' father Tom.

The second series premiered just hours after Bernard's death at the age of 79 was confirmed last month.

As the scenes unfolded, fans took to social media and sang the show's praises, with many admitting to being reduced to tears.

Taking to X, one user wrote: “UGLY, SNOTTY TEARS. Josh Finan and Emily Fairn.”

“Anyone else crying at the ending or just me? #TheResponder”, another added.

Even though the season finale has just aired, Martin and Tony have recently teased fans about whether they'd be up to making another season of the hit BBC show.

"In my mind, I'm just enjoying that this is going out. I would need a little sit down after this to enjoy it and give it time to bed in”, Martin told .

Show creator Tony agreed and joked, "When we find a really good therapist, we're going to sit down and talk about it. Until then, I don't know yet."

He added: "We've got a little caravan in Rhyl, so we're going to go there with me and Martin and have a little week away."
