EMMERDALE fans have been left unhappy and blasting the 'dull' soap amid fears that the show is wasting opportunities.

Viewers of the ITV soap have complained that show bosses are wasting away great iconic characters and storyline potential.

Over recent months, fans have been particularly unimpressed over repeated storylines and unfortunate plot holes.

Viewers have watched the never-ending love triangle between Chloe Harris, Mack Boyd and Charity Dingle as well as Chas Dingle's breast cancer battle and Caleb Miligan's feuds with her family.

Dawn and Billy's heartbreak over baby Evan as well as Nicky's hospitalisation after a car crash are the current stories dominating the week's episodes.

Nicky's car accident is the second major car crash in less than six months after Heath's deathly New Year's Eve smash.

Although, it appears that these storylines and over-emphasis on characters are wearing thin.

Writing online, one fan was left seething as they said: "There is no balance to the show. No humour either.

"Dialogue and characterisation are dull. Little long term plotting, only short term, often sensationalist or health linked plots."

The same viewers continued to rant how icons such as Kim Tate were being grossly underused and raged that ITV bosses had no respect for those tuning in.

They continued: "No sense of community or how the Dales are unique from the rest of the world. Great characters like Kim are wasted.

"The audience is treated with contempt - we WILL accept the same storylines, scenes even, repeated over and over, we WILL like Charity and Chastity at all costs and WILL feel deeply for their physical and mental health issues. I resent the manipulation."

Another agreed that the show had taken a sharp decline in quality, like fellow soap Coronation Street, as they said: "Unwatchable is one word to describe them."

Someone else left a less than glowing review as they penned: "Script writers need to fall on their their swords. Get some fresh writers with a concept of reality.

"Sick to death of all these silly dramatic and fantasy island scripts along with bottom of the barrel wooden actors and acting."
