Bafta TV Awards 2024 LIVE — Rob & Romesh take aim at TV star as winners revealed including Happy Valley and Top Boy
THE awards celebrated some of our favourite shows and celebrities in another glorious year of television.
Comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett hosted this year's ceremony once again – complete with risky gags.
While opening the show, the pair took aim at Bradley Walsh’s son Barney during their monologue.
They mocked: “Succession, all about finding out the next generation to follow in his fathers footsteps. Turns out it was Barney Walsh.”
It comes as Happy Valley, Top Boy and The Sixth Commandment won top prizes.
Meanwhile, presenters Lorraine Kelly and Floella Benjamin took home the Special Award and Fellowship.

Top Boy’s Jasmine Jobson wins best supporting actress
Bafta TV award winner Jasmine Jobson says Top Boy has ‘changed my life’.
The 29-year-old took home the supporting actress gong.
She said: “I was just a normal girl from west London that was just trying to do better for myself and was just wishing and hoping for the best.
“And one day I went from working in a bar full time and acting part time to suddenly acting full time and now acting pays my bills, so Top Boy changed my life.”
Baby Reindeer star looks unrecognisable on the Bafta red carpet
Jessica Gunning looked worlds away from her character on hit Netflix TV show Baby Reindeer.
Her red carpet look showcased a red full length dress with pleated detailing and oversized sleeves.

Savage swipe
Stacey Solomon was forced to defend her husband Joe Swash as she collected her Bafta award.
Bafta host Rob Beckett made a tongue-in-cheek comment about Joe.
“Next is the award for factual entertainment, to present it is the host of Sort Your Life Out,” co-host Romesh Ranganathan announced.
“Which is a bit much coming from the person who married Joe Swash,” Rob chipped in before calling Stacey a “national treasure”.
Giggling as she walked onto the stage, she looked over to the hosts and said: “He’s not that bad,” before joking: “He is”.

TV presenter in tears as she makes heartfelt plea to industry
Lorraine Kelly was overcome with emotion last night as she was presented with the special award at the Bafta TV Awards.
The 64-year-old watched on a film about her impressive TV career played out and Succession star Brian Cox paid tribute to the “queen of daytime TV”, who has hosted ITV chat show Lorraine for the past 30 years.
During her moving speech, Lorraine said “don’t pull up the ladder” to those from working-class backgrounds to break into the TV industry.
“I suppose if I’ve learned anything at all over the past 40 years, it’s what’s the point of having all that experience if you don’t actually share it, and if you don’t actually pass it on, and help other people,” she said.
Joe Lycett arrived as 'Queen Elizabeth' at the Baftas
Comedian Joe Lycett arrived dressed as Queen Elizabeth I, in a white cape and gown with a ruff around his neck.
He came on stage and said he was wearing the outfit as he had lost a bet.
Lycett later won best entertainment performance for his Channel 4 show Late Night Lycett.

Bafta viewers were left fuming after the hosts took home an award.
One person raged: “Rob & Romesh win the comedy award. Is this a joke? It’s so fixed and wooden. Comedy is supposed to be FUNNY!”
A second wrote: “The abysmal rob and romesh winning? what in the riggamorris is going on here then? the two most unfunny men the world has ever seen.”

Meet Bafta TV Awards host Romesh Ranganathan
Romesh Ranganathan, born March 27, 1978, is an English comedian, presenter and actor.
Prior to finding fame, Romesh worked as a maths teacher and at an airline caterers before realising comedy was his true calling.
He is best known for fronting TV shows including A League of Their Own, The Weakest Link, Asian Provocateur, The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganathan, The Ranganation and Rob & Romesh Vs with pal Rob Beckett.
Other TV shows Romesh has appeared in include Avoidance, DNA Journey, Have I Got News for You, Taskmaster, Romantic Getaway, King Gary, Judge Romesh, and The Reluctant Landlord.
Romesh is married to wife Leesa, and they are the proud parents of three sons — Alex, Theo and Charlie.

Essex boy Rob, who’s been dubbed the “Mouth of the South”, was born on January 2, 1986.
He is known for co-hosting I’m A Celebrity spin-off Get Me Out of Here! NOW! between 2012 and 2014, writing and narrating the commentary for E4’s Celebs Go Dating, and being a team captain on 8 out of 10 Cats.
He has also featured in Travel Man with Richard Ayoade, Play To The Whistle, All Together Now, and Wedding Day Winners with Lorraine Kelly.
In a 2015 episode of Mock the Week, Rob announced he’d married Louise Watts — the couple have gone on to have two children together.

Baftas fans left shocked as EastEnders actress arrives at red carpet on crutches
Balvinder Sopal wore some unusual accessories on the BAFTAs red carpet.
The actress has played Suki Panesar in the BBC soap since 2020.
Balvinder, 45, looked incredible in a black lace midi dress which she teamed with a gold sparkly handbag.
However she was forced to ditch the high heels after suffering from a leg injury.
She was wearing a gold ballet pump on one foot and a moonboot on the other, as well as supporting herself with crutches.
Carpet Chaos
Medics rushed to the BAFTA red carpet last night as Married At First Sight star Ella Morgan was seen struggling in the heat.
The star – who was dressed in a corset like dress – was spotted slumping over as she neared the end of the carpet, sparking fears and chaos amongst her co-stars.

The Lazarus Project axed after two series despite winning Bafta
Sky’s The Lazarus Project is nominated at tonight’s Bafta TV Awards – but the bold sci-fi thriller has been axed after two series.
Lead Paapa Essiedu is up for the Best Actor gong for his stint in the drama, which saw a crack team of scientists use time-bending technology to prevent an apocalypse.
Last year, it won Best TV Drama at the Bafta Cymru awards.
But despite it doing good business with critics and viewers, Sky Max has canned the series, which also starred Caroline Quentin and Tom Burke.
A Sky spokesperson confirmed: “The Lazarus Project has brought audiences jaw dropping action and time-bending storylines across two seasons, and we are incredibly proud of this Bafta-winning series.
“Whilst we won’t be commissioning another season, we would like to thank the incredible team who made this show possible.”

Hosts issued stern instructions as event kicked off
The duo kicked off the Bafta TV awards issuing stern instructions to the star-studded audience.
Rob said: "We are back for a second year as hosts. There were a few mistakes made last year so if you win, we love a good acceptance speech - but keep it tight."
Romest added: "Actually don't say anything at all.
"Producers, you can come up to the stage if you must, but please stand at the back and let the famous people talk.
"To the actors, it's impossible to 'fall in love with a script' - you read it, you liked it and thought it would make you some money."
