Instead, the in-demand comic will be heading to the BBC after creating and writing a new drama.

The upcoming show will be titled Lions, and focuses on male friendships, toxic masculinity and shame.

According to the official synopses for the highly-anticipated series, the central characters are two brothers.

It is not clear yet if Richard will also star in it.

The teaser logline for the series reads: “When Niall's estranged 'brother' Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives.

“Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers' relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way.

" It will capture the wild energy of a changing city - a changing world, even - and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question... What does it mean to be a man?”

The BBC announced they had commissioned the series back in February, but at the time it failed to create a huge buzz as Baby Reindeer was yet to hit our screens.

Now it's set to be one of the most eagerly-awaited shows in the broadcaster's upcoming slate.

Filming has yet to commence, however, so it is believed the show won't air until some time in 2025.

It will be set and shot in Glasgow.

As for Baby Reindeer, it is believed the show will not get a second series because it was a close-ended story that has been told, based on Gadd's theatre show of the same name.

That said, neither Netflix nor Gadd have officially commented on whether or not a second run could be in the pipeline.

It comes as fans have been obsessed by the word-of-mouth sensation, a semi-autobiographical tale in which Gadd's character Donny finds himself the victim of a stalker named Martha (played by Jessica Gunning).

Online sleuths have clamoured to find the 'real Martha', despite Gadd urging them not to.
