Future of beloved cartoon revealed after ‘game-changing’ season finale and rumours show has been axed

THE future of a beloved kids show has been revealed amid axe rumours. 

Bluey boss Daley Pearson has revealed the future of the cartoon ahead of the series 3 finale on Sunday which is set to “change the Heeler family forever”.

Bluey premieres on ABC Kids in Australia and Disney+ in the U.K. It also airs on CBeebies and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. 

Over the course of three seasons, it has become a firm favourite for kids (and parents) around the world. 

But fans have been left worried about the fate of the show as the upcoming finale marks the end of an era for Bluey and her family. 

Bluey’s series 3 finale will be a ‘game-changer’

The finale of Bluey’s third series is called The Sign, and it premieres globally on Sunday 14 April. 

This episode is a game-changer for the Heeler family in more ways than one. 

Firstly, it will be a whopping 28 minutes long. This is three times as long as regular episodes, which come in at under 10 minutes. 

Secondly, the episode will see the Heeler family bid goodbye to their Brisbane home as they put it on the market for $6 million AUD. 

News that the Heeler family is moving house has sparked rumours that the show has been axed.

Concerned fans rushed to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss the show’s possible cancellation. 

“There’s no way they’ll end Bluey, right?? Right??” one fan asked.

Another revealed that it’s their child’s favourite show and would hate to see it cancelled. “They can’t cancel BLUEY. My kid is about to have a BLUEY 2nd birthday party next week. It’s what we do in this house … she will be devastated and I can’t lie, we all watch it,” they commented.

Thankfully, fans don’t have to wait with bated breath for news about Bluey’s future as executive producer Daley Pearson has addressed the rumours.

Seeing that the Heeler family will be moving house in the upcoming finale, coupled with the fact that it’s a special extended episode, left Blue fans in a tailspin about the cancellation rumours. 

But happily, Daley has confirmed that Bluey won’t be going anywhere and the extended episode is part of a much larger plan for the future of the show. 

Speaking to the Australian news programme Sunrise, Daley confirmed: “For the last bit of time it’s just been this half-hour episode we’ve been working on, but we will be making more Bluey.”

“It’s been a concentration on this half-hour episode. We’ll see where it goes. I think when we have taken risks, that’s when it’s been the most exciting and I think that’s when the audience has liked it the most as well,” he continued. 

“So whatever it will be, it will be something that we’re not quite sure if we can do. But we hope we can.”

Daley also confirmed that having the Heeler family move house in no way meant the show would be cancelled. He hopes the storyline will be relatable and comforting for the show’s young viewers. 

“[Moving house is] always out of our hands. Kids will love that. Molly especially. It’s the parents’ decision. So the world changes without much of your involvement, which is a lot about what this half-hour episode is about.”

So it seems Blue fans can relax as the cartoon is here to stay. 

What does the future hold for Bluey?

The final episode of Bluey’s third season, The Sign, will be 28 minutes long as it deals with the huge storyline of the Heeler family moving house. 

But as episodes are normally under 10 minutes long, this is a massive change for the show, with Daley confirming it will determine whether longer episodes are viable for the show. 

This means longer episodes of Bluey could become the norm in series 4. And, when the show does return, Bluey and her family will be in a different house. 

In an ABC Radio Brisbane interview, Daley also teased that Bluey could return in other formats. 

“We would love to do a Bluey movie,” he revealed. “It’s no secret that this episode is kind of testing how an audience will go.”

Daley said the trick was keeping kids entertained for half an hour and admitted there is “no guarantee” of success.

“There was an element of, ‘Can an audience watch Bluey for longer?’” 

“I think we’ll wait until Sunday to find out, and that’ll help us figure out our own future,” he concluded.
