DAN Walker has hit back at critics after being slated for a 'disgraceful' outfit and 'dropping standards' on Channel 5 News.

The former BBC Breakfast personality returned to his job on the commercial network after his break away from the programme over Easter.

But as he made his on-screen comeback, Dan Walker, 47, came under fire from trolls who slammed his footwear.

The Channel 5 star donned a pair of fashionable Oliver Sweeney plimsoll-style trainers alongside a well tailored suit.

But that didn't stop the viewers complaining about his outfit choice online.

On X - formerly known on Twitter, one viewer raged: "@mrdanwalker Channel 5 News Hour tonight. I love watching Dan present this News Programme but today from 5.00pm I looked down at his feet.

"A National News Programme and he’s Wearing Trainers 👟. For a Minute I hold my Breath I know it’s not @BBCNews. But have standards gone?", this was alongside a GIF of scruffy looking white trainers.

But Dan was not taking the criticism lying down as he hit back at the fan on both X and Instagram.

Alongside images of him posing in the outfit in the glossy studio, Dan wrote: "So… a few viewers got in contact about my shoes on @c5news tonight.

"Personally, I think there are far more important things going on in the world and I don’t believe wearing these counts as a ‘disgrace’ or the dropping of ‘standards’."

He added: "They aren’t trainers and I think they are smart and I love them. What do you think? P.S. nice to be back.

"P.P.S for those asking they are @oliversweeney."

Although comments were somewhat mixed, the Classic FM presenter was flooded with support from fans and his famous pals.

Dragons's Den star Sara Davies supported her fellow TV personality as she replied: "I think they are very smart!"

Fellow radio presenter Rickie Haywood-Williams stated: "I love them too mate."

As a third fan wrote: "Very smart, and most importantly they look like they’re comfortable!"

"I love them Dan you always look very dapper on the news!," noted a fourth user.

And a fifth added: "Excellent footwear!! First thing my 81yr old dad declared as the news came on was “Look at Dan’s shoes” with a broad grin on his face! Your footwear made his day."
