However, fans of the ITV soap were immediately distracted from the action by Maria's statement top.

It consisted of a green and white large check pattern with a bright pink trim on the neckline and cuffs.

Taking to X - formerly Twitter - one fan wrote: "Maria's jumper looked like a jockey's top, kept expecting a horse to appear."

However, others thought she was paying tribute to Blue Peter legend, Peter Duncan.

The TV presenter hosted the classic BBC show from 1980 to 1986 and even landed his own spin-off series, Duncan Dares, after becoming known as the show's resident daredevil.

In a classic shot, Peter wore a green and white check midi-length jacket and matching trousers, and Corrie fans felt Maria's top was paying homage.

One shared a side by side of the two outfits on X and wrote: "Ah yes, Maria came as Peter Duncan again."

Another shared a different set of snaps of the two ensembles and simply captioned them: "#Corrie".

A third joked: "Maria Dares!"

The moment provided some much needed light relief for viewers who have been following Maria and teenage son Liam's storyline.

The youngster contemplated taking his own life a few weeks ago after being relentlessly bullied by vile schoolmate, Mason Radcliffe.

Ever since, Maria has been on edge over her son and in recent episodes, she has struggled to cope after she is forced to begin to let go of the control she has over Liam.

Having made the decision to home-school the lad, Maria has not been earning any cash in her role of hairdresser.

Maria became concerned as it became clear that Audrey was planning to replace her in her job if she didn't make a return soon.

Unable to comprehend leaving Liam, Maria decided that she would return to work but only if Gary homeschooled Liam instead of her.
